AltaVista - Search Engine
AltaVista's search technology was the first full-text Internet search service in when it debuted in 1995 using technology
developed by Digital Equipment Corporation's Research lab. The company added multilingual search in 1997 and offered support
for 25 languages. They were the first major search engine to introduce free Internet news search in 2001. Services
include Babel Fish, the web's first Internet translation service that can translate words, phrases or entire Web sites to
and from English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Russian.
They offer both paid and free inclusion services for submitting a website.
AltaVista was purchased by Overture on
April 28th 2003.
